Basic Requirement and Education
Academic qualification – One can enter this field by direct entry or through hotel management institutes. For direct entry, the vacancies are generally advertised in the newspapers and the minimum prescribed qualification is graduation with 50% marks. They are trained by the hotels themselves. But Qualified personnel are always given a higher preference. The minimum qualification required to go for a course in hotel management is 10+2. For certificate, diploma, and bachelor’s courses 10+2 is sufficient. The duration of certificate courses is six months to one year. Bachelor and diploma courses are of duration one and a half to three years. Those with graduation can go for post-graduate diploma courses the duration of which is one year. Selection to most government-recognized institutes is based on a common entrance test. The test consists of English, Reasoning, General Science, and General Knowledge. The test is of two-hour duration and is held around April every year. The test is followed by a group discussion and interview, in which a person’s personality and confidence are seen. Private institutes also conduct tests of their own, the pattern of which is almost the same.

- The ability to keep the situation under control during any crisis, discipline, commitment, and dedication is a must.
- They should have a good organizational background, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong commitment, and self-discipline.
- One must be polite and respectful to the guests, have the patience to deal with guest criticism even when you know you are right, be willing to work hard even at odd hours, and yet be cheerful.

One can get placement in different categories of hotels ranging from Indian chains of five-star properties such as Taj, Oberoi, and Welcome group, to international chains like Hyatt, Sheraton, etc. Chain of restaurants e.g.: KFC, Ruby Tuesday, Mc Donald’s, and Pizza hut are some major employers. The retail sector has a wide range open for hotel management graduates. It includes PVR, Malls, Back Office jobs, and joining as receptionists in corporate offices, Hospitals, and BPO industry.

Remuneration varies between the different organizations which employ them. Minimum monthly emoluments are approximately Rs. 7500-Rs 10000 depending upon factors such as the category of employing hotel, institute from where the student graduated, city of location, etc.
